| Course review | I had been learning Chinese for about 1.5 years before started the taking classes at MandarinHouse. My experience so far had been a university class that focused on Chinese characters and writing. So, my focus at MandarinHouse was on reading and speaking. As my work-schedule only allowed for a weekend class I was glad that Mandarin House was very flexible with their schedule and that I was offered a 1 on 1 class on Sunday morning. During the 3 hour class I usually had to read a text in the book I was provided and then had to answer questions and talk about the text. As I didn’t believe I would ever be able to speak Chinese before I started the class I was encouraged by my very patient teacher, and couldn’t believe that I was actually able to have a conversation in Chinese after just a few months. For me, it obviously just took encouragement and the weekly challenge to speak. The teaching material was a bit outdated but it still helped to learn the characters. After a few months the focus was more or less on a dialogue between me and my teacher, talking about our personal opinion on certain topics. The last 6 months of my 1.5 year course at MandarinHouse, I’ve emailed my own study material (every day life lessons rather than 20 year old Beijing University Press books), so that the teacher could prepare for the lesson and we could talk about things that are actually useful in everyday life in Shanghai. I found the course environment very pleasant, and also the location was very convenient for me. There was no excuse to skip classes even on a Sunday morning; I rather looked forward to it. |

| Course review | In our class we study reading, writing and spoken Mandarin by following textbooks, watching movies and listening to music. this exposes me to a breadth of authentic and also academic material. My teacher emphazises talking and explaining questions using Mandarin. English being the last resort. This really helps me become comfortable with speaking Chinese (which is often a problem in less dialog intensive classes like what you find in universities). | ||||||||||||||

| Course review | I started in Feb 2007, with approximately 15 hours per week. I considered learning how to write in Chinese very important for my quicker progress in the language, so I did 4 hours per week. After 8 months, I found a job and had to cut down an my classes. But I didn't want to stop and found that the only way to become comfortable in Chinese would be to be dedicated. However, this meant the teachers and the school would need to support me in doing this and I was happy to see that they were very flexible. I still try to do 3h per week! | ||||||||||||||
